Someone in Vegas Axed a Baby

I was getting my nails done the other day and did something I rarely ever do… I sat and watched the five-o’clock news.

When I was growing up in Portage, Mi, I used to watch the news all time. It was a pretty decent mixture of local hero stories and compelling crime cases that were always from somewhere far and exotic– like Los Angeles. Like a lot of little kids, I got scared at night before I went to bed. I’d say that I was afraid of the murderer who hopped on trains and killed people in the middle of the night. Of course, my mom would assure me that none of those kinds of people came to Portage. It seemed like a legit story, so I’d usually go to sleep just fine.

Now, I live in Las Vegas… a place nicknamed “Sin City.” When we first moved here, we watched the news. The big story of the night was that a body had been found in a suitcase in the dessert. The news anchor said finding bodies in suitcases was not an uncommon occurrence. Great– we stopped watching for awhile.

Since I was getting my nails done, I had no choice but to watch the whole broadcast… what did I learn? Well, at Harmon and Maryland Parkway (the very intersection I used to cross everyday when I went to UNLV), someone got ran over by a car, Nevada unemployment is still increasing, some $300,000 is being from budgets and hospitals and schools are going to suffer the most… Oh, and some dude Axed a baby 2 minutes from where I live. Just a random act of violence…

It’s so weird to watch the news and see helicopters hovering over crime scenes located in places I visit or at least pass through all the time. I don’t usually feel unsafe, but the news makes me super paranoid! I don’t want to be ignorant, so what am I supposed to do?

My girlfriend Nicole always gives me tips on how to escape should I be attacked. One really creative piece of advice that I thought was particularly good was that if I end up in someone’s trunk, I should kick out the tail light and stick my arm out for other drivers to see. SMART! Also, ball shots are always effective.

I found a website that is pretty awesome and should provide a good balance for regular news. It’s called Happynews.com !

Anyway, speaking of news.com, Pokernews.com has been going awesomely well! I’ve been covering the PartyPoker Premier League IV. Here’s a video from today:
